Budget 2026: what it means for you and your business —

Payroll, Workplace Pension & CIS

In short

We run accurate, on-time payroll under Real Time Information, manage workplace pension auto-enrolment including assessment, communications and re-enrolment, and operate the Construction Industry Scheme for construction clients — verifying subcontractors, applying the correct deduction rates and filing monthly CIS returns. CIS penalties are automatic and escalate quickly, so this is an area where accuracy is not optional.

Payroll is the one thing you cannot get wrong. People notice immediately, HMRC penalises quickly, and the reputational damage inside a business is out of all proportion to the sums involved.

What does the payroll service cover?

RTI submissions to HMRC on or before each payday — late Full Payment Submissions attract penalties. Payslips distributed securely to your staff. Starters, leavers and P45s. Statutory payments — sick pay, maternity, paternity, adoption. Year-end — P60s and P11D benefits-in-kind reporting. Directors’ payroll, including the optimal salary level given the year’s NI and tax thresholds.

What are my workplace pension obligations?

Every employer must automatically enrol eligible staff into a qualifying workplace pension and contribute a minimum of 3% of qualifying earnings.

The obligations don’t end at set-up: you must assess every employee at every pay period (as their age and earnings change, so does their eligibility), issue the statutory communications, handle opt-outs and opt-ins correctly, re-enrol eligible staff roughly every three years, and complete a declaration of compliance.

The Pensions Regulator does enforce this, and “we set it up years ago” is not a defence.

How does CIS work, and what are the penalties?

Under the Construction Industry Scheme, contractors must verify each subcontractor with HMRC, deduct tax at the correct rate (0%, 20% or 30% depending on the subcontractor’s status), issue deduction statements, and file a monthly CIS return.

Penalties for late monthly returns are automatic, begin at £100, and escalate steeply — they can reach substantial sums within months, and they apply per return.

The domestic reverse charge for VAT also applies to most CIS supplies between VAT-registered businesses, which changes both the invoicing and the cash flow. The two interact, and getting one right while getting the other wrong is common.

Frequently asked questions

What are the penalties for a late CIS return?

They're automatic and escalate steeply — starting at £100 and increasing substantially the longer a return is outstanding, applied per monthly return. Because CIS returns are monthly rather than annual, penalties can accumulate very quickly if the problem isn't caught.

What is the minimum employer pension contribution?

3% of qualifying earnings under auto-enrolment. But the obligation is ongoing, not one-off: you must assess every employee at every pay period, issue statutory communications, handle opt-outs, and re-enrol eligible staff roughly every three years, with a declaration of compliance to the Pensions Regulator.

Does the VAT reverse charge apply to my construction business?

It applies to most CIS-reportable supplies between VAT-registered businesses, shifting responsibility for accounting for VAT from supplier to customer. It significantly affects subcontractor cash flow, since you no longer receive the VAT element on your invoices. CIS and the reverse charge interact, and it's common to get one right and the other wrong.

What salary should I pay myself as a director?

It depends on the year's NI and tax thresholds, whether you have other income, and whether your company can claim the Employment Allowance. There's usually an efficient level that preserves your State Pension record without triggering unnecessary NI. We calculate it for you each year, as the thresholds move.
