Budget 2026: what it means for you and your business —

Cloud Accounting (Xero, Sage, QuickBooks)

In short

Cloud accounting gives you live visibility of cash, profit and outstanding invoices from any device, and it is the foundation of Making Tax Digital compliance. LMJ Group is a Xero Gold Partner and is certified across Sage and QuickBooks. We set up, migrate and run your system — and we migrate historical data cleanly, so you keep your comparatives and your audit trail.

Cloud accounting is not, in itself, a differentiator any more — everyone offers it. What differs enormously is whether it is set up properly: correct chart of accounts, working bank feeds, sensible reconciliation rules, and the surrounding apps that remove the manual work. A badly configured Xero is worse than a good spreadsheet.

Which cloud accounting software should I use?

Xero — our usual recommendation. Strongest app ecosystem, excellent bank feeds, genuinely good user experience, and MTD-ready. We are a Gold Partner, a status earned on volume and expertise.

QuickBooks — strong, particularly for sole traders and smaller businesses; often lower cost.

Sage — well suited to established businesses with more complex requirements, and to those already invested in the Sage ecosystem.

We work across all three. The right choice depends on your transaction volume, the apps you need to integrate, and your team — not on which one we prefer to use.

How does migration work — will I lose my history?

No, if it is done properly. We migrate your opening balances, historical transactions and comparatives, reconcile the migrated data against your old system, and run parallel where the risk warrants it.

Migration is where most cloud implementations go wrong. Rushed migrations lose comparatives, leave unreconciled balances, and produce a first year of accounts that nobody can rely on. We would rather take an extra week and have you trust the numbers.

What does cloud accounting actually give me?

Live cash position — not a figure from six weeks ago. Real-time debtors — you can see who owes you what, today. MTD compliance — digital records and digital links, built in. Access from anywhere, for you and for us simultaneously — so when you call with a question, we are looking at the same screen. A platform for automation — which is where the real efficiency comes from (see Finance Automation).

Frequently asked questions

Which is better — Xero, Sage or QuickBooks?

It depends on your business. Xero has the strongest app ecosystem and bank feeds and is our usual recommendation; QuickBooks often suits smaller businesses at lower cost; Sage suits established businesses with more complex needs. We're certified in all three and will advise on genuine fit rather than our own preference.

Will I lose my accounting history if I migrate to the cloud?

Not if it's done properly. We migrate opening balances, historical transactions and comparatives, then reconcile the migrated data against your old system before going live. Rushed migrations are where history gets lost — we'd rather take an extra week and have you trust the numbers.

Does cloud accounting make me MTD compliant automatically?

It's the foundation, but configuration matters. MTD requires digital records and digital links between systems — so if data is still being copied and pasted anywhere in your process, you're not compliant even with cloud software. We set the system up so the links are genuine.

What does Xero Gold Partner mean?

It's a status Xero awards based on the number of clients a firm supports on the platform and the certifications its staff hold. It reflects genuine depth of experience rather than a badge you can buy — and it means we've implemented Xero many times across a wide range of business types.
